About Us

Your hosts, Mark and Sue Berry would welcome the opportunity to introduce you to The Bower at Broulee

Mark & Sue Berry

The concept of "The Bower" was developed over several years while Sue & Mark were embroiled in the "corporate world" but yearned for something more fulfilling [if not more lucrative].

Sue & Mark's design brief for the Architects, Edmiston, Jones was as follows:

"Luxury self-contained accommodation offering maximum seclusion and privacy for a romantic getaway holiday in an atmosphere of opulence provided by superior fittings and quality finishes".

The 'Bower at Broulee' was named (by Mark's father) to encapsulate the concept behind the project. The architect's referred to the Macqarie dictionary;

bow'er n. place closed in with foliage, arbour or summerhouse or leafy nook; (poet.) inner room: ~-bird, Australian bird of paradise family constructing elaborate runs adorned with feathers, shells etc. during courtship.

If the following sketch represents a schematic view of a Bower Bird's run ……

The Floor plan of The Bower is similarly designed around a central axis (or "circulation spine"), with living space on one side and service areas on the other side of the main passage way (an "elaborate run adorned with ornaments").

The entrance to "The Bower" and the large expanses of glass provide "view glimpses" of the surrounding natural bushland, the spotted gums and ironbark trees, Burrawang Palms that are a feature of the local environment and the large pond surrounded by soft ferns, tree fern and more Burrawang Palms at the base of the ridge.

The landscaping plan for each "Bower" is designed to augment the natural bushland based on an arc of small trees and shrubs to form a "Bower" shaped enclosure to increase the seclusion and privacy offered to the occupants.

Future plans for the Bower

Stage 1 of The Bower project has been well received by the marketplace and our guests have encouraged us to stick to a "kid free" policy and since we are part of a Wildlife refuge adjoining a Nature Reserve, we are obliged to enforce a "no guests pets" policy.
